Im not against a solid defensive foundation but it cant be 80% of our game in every game. The thing about the low block and defending so deep is that we're constantly riding our luck defensively and have to be clinical in taking the few chances that come our way to win games. We got a bit lucky against Chelsea and although we absolutely DID deserve yesterday based on the excellent counter attacking but we did look shaky in the last 15 mins and to be honest it could perhaps have been 3-3 bar some excellent saves.

As I said, Luton will be interesting. I expect us to push out more and less sitting back and soaking up pressure. We have the players to do that and it will be good to see us go after teams a bit more, although its their first game back in the big time at home so it will be all about them. Hopefully we don't play the fall guys like we did at Forest last season!

So you got it wrong when you were telling us Benrahma was the root cause of all our issues when it was actually Rice who was the problem. Surprised you missed that one with your fantastic football knowledge.

I’d say the defence is much more settled which helps. It was chopped and changed so much last season and the team was never settled. This time you get the feeling it’s Zouma plus one, with Emerson and Coufal nailed on as full backs whereas last year it was a coin toss as to who would be in that week.

We’ve also been absolutely clinical taking chances in the last two games.

LAF - for me the difference is pretty clear.

We weren't counter attacking last year, we were defensive , so when we did get it forward it was Antonio and no one else.

Absolutely no way that we would have scored either of the first two goals we scored yesterday last season. JWP (or whoever from midfield) and bowen wouldn't have got forward to join in.

It is obvious that big head Rice and his huge ego were a deadweight last season. Soucek had to play out of position to accommodate big head's ego and the midfield and team performances suffered as a consequence.

I am so pleased to be shot of that albatross around our necks and to get £105 million for big head is excellent business.

The team is much better sin Rice and his big head.

During our poor form last season in the league, many were saying that our counter-attacking style from the previous ‘successful seasons’ had been found out. Only two games in, really, where we can see that we’re back executing this style of play effectively. So, what’s the difference? One obvious is Antonio and Bowen are firing but the main difference for me is that our back line have been almost impregnable. Now we must build on this and, as Moyes said, defending is part of the game. We all agree we want more than this - and let’s not think Moyes is stupid not to want the same. The next ten games, giving new players time to bed in, will give us a proper insight to this season’s blueprint on how we play.

We are the leagues second highest goal scorers (only Brighton are higher), have the joint highest goal difference and are top of the league. How much of that would the moaners sacrifice for higher possession?

Jennings I think most of us with a history of following the club over the last 50 years consider us a yo yo team with a very soft underbelly who were demolished away from home by any teams North of Watford.

Yes we played some nice football at home and had some decent victories and it was great to watch but let’s face facts when opposition fans, especially those from up North, saw our fixture against their side they were rubbing their hands with glee. I don’t think that happens now.

I was sick and tired of being hammered by the Oldhams and Luton’s of this world, I was sick and tired of losing to 4th division teams in the cup so, if you don’t mind, I will carry on enjoying what Moyes has done and is doing even if it means, sometimes, that we don’t play with 4 up front.

In terms of opportunities, the difference between the two sides was we created several clear cut chances where the player had time to pick his spot. Brighton on the other hand were under pressure in all but one or two of their chances (their goal for example when the scorer should've been closed down quicker) and had to snatch at them.

That's the difference between winning and losing as much as having a top in form goalkeeper.

Plenty of Brighton’s possession was passive rather than aggressive. In short the passive mode helps the defending team keep its shape and discipline.

Looking at Brighton it’s clear that they are going to miss their two expensive departures from their midfield engine room. The Brighton of this season are not going to be as successful as they were.

In terms of what sort of football us fans want to see do we really want to see a maximum possession game where we probe endlessly but safely for a rare golden chance opening or do we want a game peppered, by us, with regular high risk high reward forward passes.

One specific season where defensively we were poor... I think most West Ham fans consider us to be a side who attacks with flair, with swashbuckling CM who like a tackle but can ping balls around or even pass 10 yards and go.. wingers who can beat a man and swing a cross in to a centre forward who's actually in the box... yes we might be wearing rose tinteds but we were never a side that just sat on the edge of our own 18 yard box waiting for a mistake..

Even Moyes's style from 2 years ago was better cos we had a high press that meant we were in their half not ours we put pressure on teams not just sat and soaked it up..

I imagine the Luton manager will rest a few knowing that it’s a guaranteed win for them.

I can see the match now, we take kick off then retreat to our half, Luton retreat to their half and the ball stays in the centre circle for 90 minutes and we share the points.

“ you attack us, no you attack us “

The same Devonshire and Brooking who were part of the team relegated in 78/79 playing some of the most depressing football in our history.

I think Devonshire would have fitted into this side nicely but Brooking may be not so much.

In those days we were everyone’s second favourite team, good old West Ham always play nice football but get smashed…bless them.

I hope we are now despised by opposition fans.

I like to watch football that would mean legends like Devonshire & Brooking would have a lot of the ball if they were still playing….don’t know what exactly that would mean in the modern game but to see players like them glide around the pitch and be difficult to dispossess would be what I’d like.

Yours, stuck in the late 70’s early/mid 80’s…

Two things -

1) Goalkeepers are in the side to make saves, it’s their job. The majority of the saves were straight at him at a good height.

2) FCJ already predicting a loss to Luton, he can’t even enjoy yesterday for long. Miserable prick.

LAF - Yea, but there are other ways of course, fuck me I would not want us to play like City, they bore the pants off of me and I rarely watch them. I suppose Liverpool play a good way, high tempo, move up the pitch quickly, like Fergie's Man Utd sides did. I watched some of Arsenal's games last season and some of their football blew me away, it was on a different planet to us. It would be fucking funny and ironic if young Declan slowed them down.

Also preferred watching Madrid sides to Barca, too.

Bang on right fella. Disgusting to see our keeper is MOM and we had 20% possession. We're West Ham for fuck's sake, not fucking Wimbledon.

Fuck off out Moyes.

The Brighton fans were the most humourless, pearl clutching bad losers I've ever experienced after a match.

There was a lot of singing whilst walking to Falmer station and queueing after the match. The angry/snobby looks on their faces after the match. 90% of chanting wasn't even directed at Brighton. It was just all our West Ham songs. Their level of entitlement after a couple of seasons' success is bizarre.

Re: ⚽ Brighton v West Ham - Official Match Thread - Preview
With the progressive, attack-minded signings we have made, and are still yet to make, there is no indication that we will play so defensively going forward. It is not a blueprint for the season. I completely understand the game plans for Brighton and Chelsea - less so for Bournemouth. No, we cannot push on with 20% possession every game - however, nor do we have to strive to become a tippy tap team boring the arse of us with sideways passing. There are alternatives to both.
